Reverse Culture Shock

How a trip back to the U.S. had me nostalgic for American culture.

This month, I traveled back to the U.S.A. from France to help my parents move.

I typically use these monthly “Life in France” newsletters to discuss what it’s like to experience culture shock in France, but this month, I can’t stop thinking about the culture shock I experienced back in the U.S.A.

First Up, Let’s Talk About Target.

Shopping at Target is one of the things I miss about living in France. You go in for Drano and come out an hour later with a new handbag, yoga outfit, pet toys, and three lipsticks. And of course, forget the Drano.

Seriously, the store is set up like a human fly trap.

If you need to get to the Pharmacy, you’re forced to go through the makeup area and the shampoo aisle, where all kinds of lotions, potions, and serums are there to promise unbelievable results you can’t resist.

While cruising the aisles, I found myself a bit shocked, remembering how much unfettered access we have to over-the-counter medications in the States.
