Years ago, my father came over with a big brown bag of fresh figs from his friend’s yard. I quickly used them up in my classic crumb cake recipe, and instead of adding cinnamon sugar to the interior, I added ground cardamon.
The results were fantastic! From then on, this cake was known as “The Fabulous Fig Cake” because it’s just so, well, fabulous!

It’s All About the Cardamon
The biggest feedback I’ve received about this cake is about the cardamon! It just makes the cake so yummy and interesting.
But I get that it’s a specific flavor not loved by all. So, if you find yourself in that camp, swap the cardamon for pumpkin pie spice.
The Candied Ginger
The combination of the cardamon and the candied ginger is a real winner! It provides a delicious, sweet, spicy chew throughout the cake.
You can find the candied ginger at Trader Joe’s. It comes in a big bag, but you can also use it in my Pumpkin Scone recipe or tossed into some Homemade Granola is also great!
Fresh Figs vs. Other Fruits
Fresh figs have a very short season, typically August-October. So, if you’ve missed them, you can swap the figs for pears, apples, apricots, or plums.
Don’t Skip the Crumble!
The sweet, chewy crumble on top is the cherry on top! Not only is the flavor great, but the crumbly, chewy texture is a great complement to the soft, fluffy cake.
Serve for Brunch or Dessert!
This Fabulous Fig Cake can be served at brunch with coffee or at tea time as a snack or with a big dollop of homemade whipped cream for dessert! It also freezes beautifully too!
Fig season is the best and this cake is on the list for weekend baking!
