Starting back in October my husband Philippe started to prepare me for “drinks with The Mayor”. An event that would take place in January in our small town of Saint-Gilles-Croix de Vie, France. Every time he would mention it, I kept imagining something out of a Christopher Guest movie, like Waiting for Guffman.
Would we all pile into the school auditorium? Wait our turn to shake the mayor’s hand while sipping wine from plastic cups? What was the purpose of this meet and greet? Was it campaign season?
It turns out Le Voeux du Maire de la Bonne Année (The Best Wishes of the Mayor for the New Year) is an annual event that takes place all over France during the month of January, in small towns and big cities. It even happens in Paris!
